This presentation updates medical practitioners managing lactating women with mastitis. A fundamental understanding of the pathophysiology of mastitis is gained, and the progression of mastitis is detailed. The various risk factors for mastitis are defined. Subtypes of mastitis are described, along with relevant diagnostic testing. Both topical and oral therapies for the distinct subsets of mastitis are presented, as well as non-pharmacologic interventions. Integrated into the discussion of therapeutics are safety concerns in lactation. In order to identify appropriate medication choices relevant applications i.e., apps, and online tools are presented and their usefulness to clinicians is highlighted.
