Dietary supplements are a common integrative approach for those living with pain. While approximately half of the general US population utilize dietary supplements, the percentage appears to be higher for those living with pain. This article will review the reasons for this as well as provide a framework for working with patients to ensure supplements are chosen wisely for pain management. In addition, an overview of common supplements utilized for pain will be provided.
A member of the Division of Integrative Medicine, Dr. Bonakdar received his medical degree from the University of Nevada School of Medicine and his undergraduate degree in psychobiology from Occidental College in Los Angeles. He received the Richter Fellowship for Independent International Research in the field of Southeast Asian heath practices and studied in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, and Indonesia. He completed a clinical and research fellowship in integrative medicine at Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in La Jolla and a residency in family practice at the Sharp Grossmont Family Practice Residency Program in San Diego. Board certified by the American Board of Family Practice, Dr. Bonakdar is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the California Academy of Family Physicians, the American Holistic Medical Association, and the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. He has conducted award-winning research and presented at numerous conferences in the area of herbal and natural medicines.
Dr. Jennifer Ornelas is a board-certified dermatologist and pediatric dermatologist. She has conducted translational research investigating botanical extracts as novel treatment options for acne and earned a master’s in clinical and translational research. She is passionate about working with children and adults alike and providing excellent care to all of her patients. She is committed to serving the medically underserved populations of the region and strives to provide culturally competent specialist care in her practice.
