Hair Loss

Hair loss, which can be caused by various disorders, can be distressing for patients and difficult to treat. In this course you will learn about different types of hair loss commonly encountered in the primary care setting and their treatments.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe common hair loss disorders such as alopecia areata, androgenic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and traction alopecia
  2. List conventional and integrative treatments for various hair loss disorders

OTC Skin Care Products

The skin care product market is a multibillion dollar industry. Patients often present to healthcare practitioners inquiring about skin care products and regimens. In this course you will learn about different skin care products and cosmeceuticals you can recommend to your patients.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. List common cosmeceuticals
  2. Describe various skin products for different indications (anti-aging, moisture, hygiene) and skin types
  3. List common brands of over the counter skin care products to recommend to patients

TCM Approach to Skin Care

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete and unique medical system that has been used for thousands of years. TCM and acupuncture are widely used for the treatment of skin diseases throughout Asia, and there is growing usage in the United States. Therapies are personalized for each patient based upon the proper identification of the disease pattern underlying the condition. This course offers an introduction to TCM dermatology, including TCM dermatology approach to diagnosis and treatment, basic understanding of how herbal medicine is delivered orally and topically, as well as exploration of basic science and clinical trials of TCM in dermatology. We will review Chinese medicine and acupuncture treatments of psoriasis, acne, and atopic eczema. We will also discuss good candidates for TCM treatment.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Diagram basic concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine
  2. Summarize how herbal medicine and acupuncture are provided
  3. Inventory mechanisms of acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment

After finishing Medical School and Dermatology Residency at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Bodemer completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. She was the first Dermatologist to be board certified in both Dermatology and Integrative Medicine and currently is the only Dermatologist to serve on the Integrative Medicine Board. She has authored academic texts and curriculum and has spoken widely on a variety of topics related to Integrative Dermatology. She has always been drawn to exploring how lifestyle choices impact skin health and disease and feels that the most powerful role a physician can play is as an educator and guide, empowering people to get healthy and stay healthy.

Dr. Joseph Alban is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Board Certified Herbalist. He has run a private practice in New York City for seventeen years.

Dr. Alban graduated from Touro College’s Graduate Program in Oriental Medicine, obtaining a Masters of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and completed a Doctor of Acupuncture at Five Branches Univerisity. He completed a Chinese Medicine hospital residency in Hunan, China where he trained in acupuncture, Chinese medicine dermatology, and Tui Na medical massage.

He has received the Traditional Chinese Medicine Dermatology Diploma from world-renowned expert Mazin Al-Khafaji. Dr. Alban sits on the board of the International Traditional Chinese Medicine Dermatology Association (ITCMDA). He is also the Traditional Chinese Medicine editor for Learn Skin and on the board for the Integrative Dermatology Symposium. He is the head editor and a contributing author of the ebook An Introduction to Chinese Medicine Dermatology which resulted from a collaboration of the ITCMDA and Learn Skin.
