This session will review the importance of shared decision making and how to most effectively involve the patient in diagnosis and treatment related discussions. The role of understanding the patient’s treatment and cultural perspectives will be explored along with how to incorporate discussions around pharmaceutical and nutrition based approaches.
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, participants will be able to:
- Examine the impact of shared decision in access to treatment and the financial burden on the healthcare system
- Weave a discussion with the patient that includes evidence from pharmaceutical, psychological, and nutrition based studies
- Identify a treatment approach that involves the patient’s perspective including cultural and treatment related preferences
Faculty
Dr. Daveluy is a professor and program director at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He earned a bachelor's in science from Michigan State University. He completed medical school and his dermatology residency at Wayne State University.
He holds special interests in teledermatology, noninvasive skin imaging, skin of color, integrative dermatology, and complex medical dermatology, including hidradenitis suppurativa. He is active on AAD committees, including Performance Measure and DataDerm Oversight. He is the past president of the Wayne County Medical Society and Michigan Dermatological Society. He serves on the board of directors of the HS Foundation and editorial board for the JAAD and JAAD Case Reports and is building a growing body of publications of his own. He lives across the border in Windsor, Ontario, Canada with his husband and two very spoiled dogs
