Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a commonly under-diagnosed condition caused by an increase in amount of bacteria in the small intestine (either pathogenic or commensal), where colonization should normally be low.1 This overgrowth of bacteria can cause excessive fermentation and inflammation and can significantly alter the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract. Potential consequences of SIBO, such as malabsorption, can lead to other systemic problems such as skin dysfunction.2 This course provides an overview of a naturopathic medical approach to evaluating and treating SIBO from an evidence-based perspective.
