Biofeedback: An Introduction

This lecture will explore the fundamental concepts and practical aspects of biofeedback, and where it has been used in clinical medicine.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Outline some of the conditions where biofeedback may be helpful
  • Identify some potential pitfalls of biofeedback

Healing Touch

This session introduces healing touch, including what it is, how it is done, and the certification process.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe Healing Touch
  • Identify types of patients Healing Touch can benefit
  • Assess barriers to Healing Touch

Reiki in Integrative Medicine

Reiki and other energy healing modalities are becoming more and more popular. Reiki can be combined easily with other traditional or integrative modalities. Of the various healing modalities, Reiki has been one of the most researched. Learn about the history and practice of Reiki.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review the history and practice of Reiki
  • Evaluate the scientific data on Reiki
  • Identify ways Reiki can be integrated into a dermatology practice
  • Practice some Reiki-related activities

Hypnosis

This session takes a deep dive into medical hypnosis with an eye towards operating theories and detailed review of the evidence in dermatology.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the current medical understanding of hypnotherapy
  • Outline some of the studies that have been done on hypnosis for dermatologic issues
  • Identify some patient types or conditions that may be best suited for hypnotherapy

Psychology and Eczema: Points of Intersection and How Psychological Science Can Help QoL and Stress Management (Roundtable Session)

We will discuss stress and eczema. Patients must manage both a long term condition and flare ups. We will consider how stress management skills and behavioral changes can improve quality of life. Two types of stress management in particular, self-hypnosis training and mindfulness, will be described and experiential opportunities will be presented. Finally, clinical tips for incorporating language that supports these stress management skills will be offered. 

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review eczema as a chronic and an acute condition, that can be stress mediated at times.
  • Recall the impact of stress, particularly as it impacts AD and becomes part of a mind-body cycle.
  • Review two stress management techniques that are useful for eczema-related chronic and acute stress
    • Clinical Hypnosis: Modifying sensations like itch and pain
    • Mindfulness: Building resilience to manage stress

Peter Lio

Dr. Peter Lio is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his internship in Pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital, and his Dermatology training at Harvard where he served as Chief Resident in Dermatology. Dr. Lio is the founding director of the Chicago Integrative Eczema Center and has spoken nationally and internationally about atopic dermatitis, as well as alternative medicine.

After finishing Medical School and Dermatology Residency at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Bodemer completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. She was the first Dermatologist to be board certified in both Dermatology and Integrative Medicine and currently is the only Dermatologist to serve on the Integrative Medicine Board. She has authored academic texts and curriculum and has spoken widely on a variety of topics related to Integrative Dermatology. She has always been drawn to exploring how lifestyle choices impact skin health and disease and feels that the most powerful role a physician can play is as an educator and guide, empowering people to get healthy and stay healthy.

Dr. Judith Hong is a board-certified dermatologist at a private practice in Santa Rosa, California. After completing medical school and residency training at UCSF, she moved to Sonoma County and developed an interest in meditation, qigong, and reiki practices. She is a certified reiki-teacher master and enjoys doing reiki for friends, colleagues, and patients.

Lisa Lombard

Dr. Lisa Lombard is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago, USA. She has over 30 years of direct service, teaching, and supervisory experience. She integrates mind-body skills in her therapeutic work with children, families, and adults as they cope with anxiety, stress-mediated health concerns, and pain. She also treats children and adults experiencing unexpected grief and loss. She regularly trains health care providers on stress and pain management. Dr. Lombard is a psychological advisor to a start-up tech company that supports food allergy care and co-founded a non-profit, Comfort Kits for Children®.  

For over 10 years she delivered services within a preschool and elementary school, in addition to her private practice. She provided parent guidance, clinical supervision to psychology graduate students, and consultation to educators on topics such as risk behaviors, trauma, SEL, and screen-time.

She was a Research Assistant Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Medical Social Sciences, Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research, where she applied her knowledge of stress management skills (like mindfulness, hypnosis, and guided imagery) to better understand and meet the psycho-emotional needs of those with food allergies, eczema, and atopic disease. She was a team member on several research projects that resulted in a dozen peer-reviewed publications. While on faculty she led behavioral health initiatives within the Center and the launch of a free digital behavioral health tool for parents during the pandemic.

In March 2022 she co-founded the nonprofit Comfort Kits for Children, an outgrowth of collaboration with the National Pediatric Hypnosis Training Institute (NPHTI) and HealthFrontiers.org. They have provided over 1500 Comfort Kits of mind-body toys and practices globally, to children impacted by war (Ukraine, Poland, Israel, and potentially Gaza), earthquakes (Turkey), wildfires (Maui, Hawaii USA), and community violence (Chicago). This organization maintains a website of curated behavioral health resources to support children experiencing traumatic events and is available in 6 languages. They also provide webinars and virtual Q & A sessions to caregivers in schools, shelters, and clinics who use Comfort Kits with children. 

Dr. Lombard earned her BA in Behavioral Sciences and PhD in Psychology/Human Development from the University of Chicago, where she trained and worked with Erika Fromm, PhD. She completed an APA-approved internship at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute. She is an ASCH Approved Consultant. She is an active teacher and leader in NPHTI (Faculty and President of the Board of Directors). She represents Division 30 (Society for Psychological Hypnosis) in the Council of Representatives of the American Psychological Association and is past president of the Chicago Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Throughout the pandemic she provided free weekly virtual mindfulness sessions for her community and colleagues.
