Welcome to module 8 where we'll review Inflammatory Dermatoses!

Bullous Diseases: Pathophysiology, BP, PV, DH

This course reviews bullous diseases including bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris, and dermatitis herpetiformis. The pathophysiology course, prognosis and both traditional and integrative therapeutic approaches to management for these conditions will be discussed.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review the pathophysiology of bullous pemphigoid 
  • Discuss the pathophysiology of pemphigus vulgaris
  • Recall the pathophysiology of dermatitis herpetiformis 
  • Identify both traditional and integrative therapeutic approaches to management 

Drug Reactions

This course reviews the pathophysiology of drug reactions along with the presentation, course, prognosis, and management, both traditional and integrative.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify medications that commonly cause drug reactions and their respective clinical presentations
  • Describe the clinical presentation of common drug rashes
  • Describe the clinical presentation of severe cutaneous drug reactions 

Vasculitis: Small Vessel and Henoch-Schonlein Purpura

This course reviews common small vessel vasculitis including Henoch-Schönlein Purpura, etiology, presentation, course, prognosis and both traditional and integrative approaches to therapy.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology of small vessel vasculitis 
  • Review the epidemiology of Henoch-Schönlein Purpura
  • Discuss the clinical presentation, course, prognosis and therapeutic options/management of small vessel vasculitis and Henoch-Schonlein purpura 
  • Just for fun…. Let's discuss some integrative approaches!!

Neutrophilic Dermatoses (Dissecting Cellulitis, PG, HS)

This course will review common neutrophilic dermatoses including dissecting cellulitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, and hidradenitis suppurativa. Presentation, pathophysiology, course, prognosis and therapeutic treatment options and management will be discussed, both from a traditional and an integrative approach.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the neutrophilic dermatoses
    • Pyoderma Gangrenosum
    • Sweet’s Syndrome 
    • Behcet’s Disease
  • Review differential diagnosis
  • Review traditional treatment methods
  • Discuss complementary medicinal therapy

Urticaria: Acute and Chronic

This course reviews acute and chronic urticaria as well as mastocytosis along with presentation, pathophysiology, course, prognosis and management. This course will also look at the role nutrition and supplements play in urticaria and mastocytosis.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize both common & rare forms of urticaria 
  • Discuss basic and alternative treatment options 
  • Review basics of mastocytosis & workup

Erythematous Rashes (Erythema Multiforme, Erythema Nodosum, Figurate Erythemas, Granuloma Annulare)

This course will review the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, course, prognosis and therapeutic options, both traditional and integrative in common erythematous rashes including erythema multiforme, erythema nodosum, figurate erythemas, and granuloma annulare.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review commonly seen erythematous rashes in dermatology such as erythema multiforme, erythema nodosum, figurate erythemas, granuloma annulare 
  • List clinical presentations, etiology, course, prognosis, and therapeutic treatment options for the common erythematous rashes listed 
  • Discuss laboratory and pathology associated with these common erythematous rashes 

Venous Stasis (Cutaneous Manifestations of Vascular Disease)

This course will review venous stasis disorders along with disorders of subcutaneous inflammation, presentation, pathophysiology, course, prognosis and both traditional and integrative approaches to management.

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Review basic vascular anatomy 
  • Discuss common cutaneous manifestations of vascular pathology 
  • Differentiate arterial and venous based disease 
  • List basic principles to treatment

Steve Daveluy
MD

Dr. Daveluy is a professor and program director at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He earned a bachelor's in science from Michigan State University. He completed medical school and his dermatology residency at Wayne State University.

He holds special interests in teledermatology, noninvasive skin imaging, skin of color, integrative dermatology, and complex medical dermatology, including hidradenitis suppurativa. He is active on AAD committees, including Performance Measure and DataDerm Oversight. He is the past president of the Wayne County Medical Society and Michigan Dermatological Society. He serves on the board of directors of the HS Foundation and editorial board for the JAAD and JAAD Case Reports and is building a growing body of publications of his own. He lives across the border in Windsor, Ontario, Canada with his husband and two very spoiled dogs

Aunna Pourang
MD

Dr. Aunna Pourang is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine Medical Honors Program and is board-certified in family physician (Mayo Clinic) and integrative medicine (Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine). She is currently a dermatology resident at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

 

Her interests include integrative dermatology, complex medical dermatology, global and preventive health, and antibiotic-stewardship.

Valerie A Stern
DMSc MPAS PA-C

Valerie A Stern, DMSc, MPAS, PA-C is a board certified, SDPA Dermatology Diplomate Fellow practicing integrative dermatology. Valerie has specialized in dermatology for over 20 years and practices general, surgical, cosmetic and laser dermatology from an integrative standpoint. 

Valerie received her degree in Physician Assistant Medicine from Keck, USC School of Medicine, she then obtained her masters degree in dermatology from the University of Nebraska Medical School followed by doctorate degrees in medical science with emphasis on dermatology and physician assistant education from Lynchburg University in Virginia.  

Valerie lectures and teaches at USC Keck School of Medicine, Department of Physician Assistant Studies as well as acting as an expert in legal case testimonial during malpractice litigation involving advanced practice providers. Valerie has been an international laser trainer, educator and lecturer for two large laser companies over the past 15 years. 

Valerie is passionate about providing the highest quality care to each and every patient she sees. She believes that internal optimization is key to overall health which manifests outwardly onto the skin. Understanding root cause etiology plays a significant role in keeping the skin at its best.

In her free time, Valerie loves to study, learning all she can about environmental interactions and genetic predisposition, focusing on such factors as toxins in our homes, the foods we consume, and the products we put on our skin daily, all of which impact our overall health and well being.  

Valerie’s goal is to provide each patient with the education and comprehensive care they deserve through quality interactions using a team approach, helping to achieve success in their skin health goals.

Dr. Rahbar is a board certified physician dermatologist and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. She received her undergraduate training at the University of Pennsylvania and Emory University. Prior to entering medical school, she worked as an English teacher in Argentina before traveling through South America to learn Spanish. After completing four years of medical training at Vanderbilt Medical School she underwent residency training in dermatology at the University of Virginia. She has practiced dermatology in New York, Virginia and is planning to start her practice in Charleston SC in 2025. In her free time she enjoys running, yoga, surfing and ceramics with her family.
