Dr. Afton Chavez is currently a dermatology resident physician at Brown University. She is a New Mexico native who graduated summa cum laude from the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in Global Health and a minor in Spanish. She received her medical degree at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She has conducted extensive projects and research within innovation, global health, and health and human rights, including a health informatics fellowship in Botswana, Africa, where she pioneered several research efforts in telemedicine and open source technologies. She completed her preliminary year in Internal Medicine at Kaiser Oakland, where she created the first Complementary and Alternative Medicine elective for residents, and she continues to explore integrative practices within dermatology. Dr. Chavez believes that there are many factors that influence health, and that the whole patient-the unique culture, experiences, lifestyle, and mental and spiritual well-being of a person--should be considered to promote maximal health and happiness. When she's not working, you can find Dr. Chavez practicing yoga, traveling, running, making art, cycling, or spending time in the beautiful outdoors.
